César Stroscio

César Stroscio
A bellow full of tango

El bandoneòn, con tantos pliegues, por què un sonido
turbio, masticado, ese silbido blando que no hace
darse vuelta al silencio?
Pobre màquina, cielito de nàcar, tùnel de amor para la rata,
no sé còmo decirte: cesa, desintégrate,
tan familiar, tan concurrido.

Julio Cortazar

César Stroscio, argentine bandoneonist, composer and arranger was born in Tucuman in 1943. At early age he began to study the bandoneòn at the Barrio Conservatory in Buenos Aires; being a precocious talent, he recorded his first vinyl as soloist when he was just ten years old. Then, he specialized with Alejandro Barletta and Francisco Requena. In the same time he played with numberless Tango orchestra and with the Quinteto Blanco.
In 1963 he was one of the Cedron-Stroscio-Praino founders (lately Cuarteto Cedron), which was a historical band of new argentine popular music. They also established a night-club  – the legendary Gotàn of Calle Talcahuano – where the greatest Tango artists, such as Astor Piazzolla, Eduardo Rovira, Horacio Salgàn used to play regularly.
In the early Seventies, the Cuarteto moved to Paris and started a wonderful international career made of 12 albums with Polydor and many worldwide tours.
Even playing with Cuarteto Cedron, César Stroscio diversified his activity by collaborating with classical groups (Orchestre Nationale de Lille, Quintette Avril) and with numberless soloists and singers, such as Paco Ibañez, Georges Moustaky, Angel Parra, Quilapayun, Hélène Martin, Colette Magny, Jacques Bertin. All these works have been recorded.
César Stroscio was also requested either as composer for motion pictures soundtracks (Au delà du miroir by Bernard D’Aubrigeon, 1978, Viva and Anden 14 by Anatome, 1984, Alphabetango by Anne Quesemant and Laurent Berman, 1989) and as a soloist (Apt, Chinon, Verfeuil, Barcelona, Liège, Firenze).
César Stroscio performed as musician and actor in big international productions (Memoires de Buenos Aires by Theatre du Gymnase de Marseille, Con animo de Tango at the Chorège of Bourges, Le petit nord cherche le gran Sud and Songe d’étè at the Festival d’Avignon.

In 1988 he parted from Cuarteto Cedron and joined the Luis Rizzo Cuarteto, who invited him to tour (Poland, Martinica, Sweden, Belgium, France, Italy) and to record a CD with the italian singer Susanna Rizzi (Tristesse for the Materiali Sonori label)
Crowning achievement of his life in music, in 1992 César Stroscio established the Cuarteto Esquina, with Carlos Carlsen, Claudio Enriquez and Susanna Rizzi. The new ensemble devoted itself to the Tango Nuevo and the new Tango Poetry and immediately got a huge success of critics and audiences since the first recitals in France, Spain, Germany and Italy. At the end of the next year, the first Esquina album was released by Materiali Sonori. In 1993, Mr. Stroscio was bandoneòn soloist in the Astor Piazzolla Hommage à Liège premiere.
Between 1994 and 1995, Esquina reached the the line-up of today when the bass-player Hubert Tissier joined the group.
In 1995, the second album Musiques du Rio de la Plata, dedicated to Eduardo Rovira, was awarded with the Charles Cros prize by the French Critics Association.
Since then, the growing popularity of Esquina has been really remarkable: with the Peter Gabriel's Womad they toured Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Indonesia and Usa. Collaborations with Gian Maria Testa and Misia took Esquina to perform at the Paris Olympia. Even their “reunion” in Buenos Aires at Teatro San Martin was an outstanding success.

More recently, the producer Marco Castellani asked Stroscio and  Enriquez a special composition for the book Tango by Hugo Pratt. This CD recorded in 1998 was released in six countries in Europe and got the most enthusiastic reviews.
In 2000, Stroscio's Esquina worked with Vinicio Capossela and with Misia.
In the same year, he began a new project with Angelica Ionatos: they toured together in France, Europe and Canada.
In the april of 2002 the second CD dedicated to Corto Maltese, was released by the Buda Musique label.
César Stroscio is also Bandoneòn Master at the Paris-Gennevilliers Conservatory of Music.
