| Esquina, symbol of Buenos Aires |
In spanish ESQUINA
means "streetcorner" or "junction" whereas
in the Buenos Aires slang esquina is the place where we meet,
we become friends, we fall in love and we split. The esquina
is where the barriada (gang of neighbours) feels at home; we
date at the esquina and then we go elsewhere and from anywhere
we always go back to the esquina; esquina so-and-so is the
place-name we carry in our heart and we like to remember when
we are far
and exiled.
Tener esquina or no tener esquina is an idiomatic phrase meaning
to have or have not experience in life, to have or have not
that hard and cynical view on human things which is so typical
porteño.
As a matter of fact, the esquina is a symbol of the Buenos Aires everyday life,
of its sentiments and its wonderful music.
Here comes the philosophy of this band: Tango with scents of Jazz and Contemporary
Music, border sounds, crossroads opportunities. Their arrangements are complex,
but not affected, they are refined and relentlessly sincere, as we can expect
from who is used to know a lot of esquinas. And there is also something more:
these three great musicians can't hide their enormous joy of playing together.

| The essential
Esquina |
The TRIO ESQUINA
was born in 1991 as a quartet with the bass-player Carlos Carlsen
and the singer Susanna Rizzi.
In 1994 it reached the line-up of today when Hubert Tissier joined the group.
From 1992 up to now, it has recorded five albums and played important theatres
and Festivals in Europe - Avignon, Cartoucherie de Vincennes, Barbican Center
of London, The Genoa Opera, Barcelona's Grec. In 1995, the group's second CD
was awarded with the Charles Cros prize by the french critics.
From 1996 to 1998 the Trio Esquina has taken part in Womad, which is the travelling
Festival created by Peter Gabriel in order to promote the World Music. With
Womad ESQUINA toured Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Usa and China extensively.
The recent collaborations with artists such as Enrico Rava, Vinicio Capossela
and Misia are of remarkable interest. In 2000 the Trio was invited to perform
at the Paris Olympia byith this Fado singer.
Also the ESQUINA forays into Poetry and Dance, through the album Ruiseñores
de nuevo with Juan Gelman and the shows POSTALES DE BUENOS AIRES, CATALOGO TANGUEROS,
DESDELALMA with the Mariachiara Michieli choreography and the César
Stroscio and Claudio Enriquez original arrangements, are worth a mention.
