The choreographer

Mariachiara Michieli

It is the eternal, and daring Tango of course; even though it seems to pursue the fusion with Modern Dance, it finds another facet of itself, whose exact light and formal clarity remind us of one of the greatest contemporary Masters: Billy Forsythe, who is the choreographer Ms. Michieli is hinting at as ideal point of reference in her journey into the new.

Mariachiara Michieli, dancer, choreographer and director was born in Venezia (Italy) in 1964.
In 1987, she began to study the Tango with several Argentine teachers. Two years later, she decided to move to Buenos Aires in order to specialize with the three greatest Tango Masters in their age: Miguel Balmaceda, Pepito Avellaneda, Antonio Todaro (the famous Master of Masters)
During the following two years, Mariachiara took daily private classes in Tango and Ballet technique. In the meanwhile, she continued to dance every night with the most renowned "milongueros" (popular dancers or milonga goers), especially with those who were still dancing the legendary Villa Urquiza style. This particular style was always considered the most sophisticated and elegant Tango ever.
In 1991, Mariachiara made her professional debut dancing with Alejandro Aquino, with whom she established a steady pair. Mr. Aquino was one of the most prestigious dancer in his time, formerly in the Colon Ballet and lately with the Osvaldo Pugliese Orchestra. In the same year, Mariachiara went back to Europe as a teacher. In London, she founded the Tango school "The Argentino way" which is still existing. She also gave lessons in Germany, Holland, France, Switzerland and, of course, Italy.

In 1992, Mariachiara and Alejandro, in association with Marco Castellani, created the very first version of Tangueros for the Oriente-Occidente International Festival.
The show was conceived as an anthology of authentic Tango and featured three couples (leadered by Mr. Aquino and Mrs. Michieli) and the Sexteto Tango directed by Osvaldo Ruggiero. Tangueros got rave reviews by the taughest dance critics (Alberto Testa, Mario Pasi and Elsa Airoldi - among them - wrote of the "first dancers’ stylistic mastership" ). The audience’s reaction too was enthusiastic: in the following three years Tangueros was booked in over 150 theaters only in Italy.
Between 1992 and 1995, Mariachiara travelled to and from Buenos Aires many times.
In Argentina she continued the specialization with her Masters, while the profession often required her in Europe. The performances and the workshops thickened so much that Mariachiara gave up her home in Buenos Aires and moved again to Milano.
In 1995, Mariachiara leadered Postcards from Buenos Aires with the live music by the Trio Esquina (one of Contemporary Tango's top bands) for the Cremona Dance Festival. In the same year, she was invited by the famous director Patrick Guinaud in his show in Paris.

The year 1996 was very important in Mariachiara's career: after the Milonga Boulevard (first version) première and another successful tour in Italy, she parted from Alejandro. From that moment on, Mariachiara decided to quit the stage and take charge of the artistic direction of the new born Company.

In 1997 she engaged new dancers, created brand new chorographies and gave the Company a new structure. The Nueva Compania Tangueros toured Italy three times with the new versions of Tangueros and Milonga Boulevard.

During the austral winter of 1998, Mariachiara spent three months in Buenos Aires creating a new show called Cuatro Noches dedicated to four legendary night spots of the Sixties, where the New Tango was born. With the Sexteto Canyengue's live music, Cuatro Noches opened successfully in Milano in March 1999.
One year later, Mariachiara created CORAZON QUEBRADO after the Julio Cortazar's short story "The Gates of Heaven". This work made its debut at the International Dance Festival of Nervi in July 2000. For its innovative choreography and its artistic coherence in all its elements, CORAZON QUEBRADO is now considered the first Tango Ballet ever.

Between 2001 and 2002, Mariachiara continued her innovative work creating two new shows: SLUMS/Bajofondo with the music by Piazzolla and Bernstein, and DESDELALMA with the César Stroscio's bandoneòn solos.

Mariachiara's didactic activity has always been mostly "inside" her Company, except for a few workshops given in some european cities. Anyway, starting from the Autumn 2002, she has established a steady Tango School in Milano.

In 2003, Mariachiara created CATALOGO TANGUEROS with music by Trio Esquina and Cuarteto Alma: the show has been invited to the Venice Biennale, to Villa Arconati Festival, to Palermo's Spasimo, to Politeama Greco of Lecce and Piccinni of Bari.
In 2004 she began to work at a new show with Esquina and the singer Luis Sampaoli. The temporary title was GOTAN - EL OTRO TANGO. Some of these new choreographies have been tested in CATALOGO during the 2004 and 2005 tours (Teatro della Tosse of Genova, Teatro Duse of Bologna, Piazza del Duomo in Spoleto).
